Reality Capture going free for everyone*

The other day, I saw that Capturing reality announced a new pricing plan for their photogrammetry software Reality Capture:

Reality Captured wormed it’s way into my heart as my favourite photogrammetry software. Initially, while I was blown away by the speed of Reality Capture, I had a bit of a rough first impression due to it’s slightly more complex user interface. It also, at the time, had fairly prohibitive pricing structures, which rapidly came down in price, and then became free for academic use, which was superb.

That still left a few out in the cold though – colleagues who perhaps are palaeontologists, but don’t have a permanent academic position, for instance.

Well, that’s all changed now – the new pricing, which is being advertised when you start the app up now:

Will be completely free for academics, students, and companies making less than a million dollars a year.

This is fantastic news.

Unless you have a Mac. Because Reality Capture does need an Nvidia GPU, so it won’t even work in a windows VM. Whomp whomp. Still, there’s always Metashape, which is always fantastic, and just $59 for academics (last I checked). There’s also still a few options (see bottom of this page) that either don’t need Nvidia and can run in a windows VM on a mac, or a few that run natively.
